Why Yes, I'll Jump onto the Bandwagon!

So. Disney is going to buy Marvel for a large sum of money. I find myself rather bemused by this information. It is similar, I suppose to when Time Warner bought DC. For the most part, it seems as though they have left the comic book division more or less to itself, and I wonder if Marvel can expect the same treatment from Disney?

My second thought, was what about Universal, and that nice little theme park, that they have down in Florida? Haven't a clue, as to what it going to be going on there.

Then of course, I had to go and read through some people's comments. So far, I think that Bully over at http://www.bullyscomics.blogspot.com is the funniest. I don't really know WHAT to think! I suppose that it gives Marvel some financial security, while giving Disney a product that will appeal to boys. Maybe it will encourage them to tone down all the rape and murder and stuff a bit. It would be nice to be able to read about HEROES for a change, I'm finding the All Villains...All The Time stories to be a bit tedious.

I suppose that there won't be more of those tawdry little statues, when Mary Jane will probably wind up looking like Ariel. We can match the Disney Princess to the Marvel character! Wouldn't that be fun?

Anyhoo. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. But it should definitely be...interesting.

Hee

I can honestly say, that I don't even know what's going on here, or what this scan is from, but it HAS to be by the incomparable Sergio Aragones.

And it makes me giggle.

silly

And sometimes that's enough.

Green Lantern #45

And Blackest Night continues. Hal really doesn't even show up in this issue, which is unnusual to say the least, but I can't say that I missed him at all, because Sinestro and Carol have one heck of a duel going on, over in Zamaron.

John does show up, briefly, but it is one HECK of an appearance!

John Stewart

Great Guardians! Xanshi has been created as a Black Lantern! Presumably, so that Mogo has something to do. I'd hate for Geoff to forget about Mogo. Does this mean that Ranxx will be showing up as an undead city? He was already evil, can he get eviler?

Anyhoo...The Sinestro Corps has come to Zamaron, to break out their imprisoned cohorts, namely Kryb, Karu Sil, and Kriazis. The Zamarons are putting up a pretty decent battle all things considered, but Carol Ferris, who has willingly put the ring on, is doing pretty damned good. At least Queen Aga'po seems to think so. And from his initial reaction, so does Sinestro!

The War of Light seems to be well underway, with battles ensuing on Ysmault, where Boodikka, Hannu, Tomar Tu and Graf Toren are trying to retrieve the body of Laira. Too bad Atrocitus shows up. But that's not the worst of it, the Black Rings show up and just happen to make Black Lanterns out of the rest of the Inversions, murdered coincidentally by Atrocitus. I'll bet THAT is going to be one heck of a reunion!

But back to Sinestro and Carol. He's having a fine old time taunting her, showing a yellow construct of Hal (which incidentally is his only appearance) and saying that he'll never love her or appreciate what she's doing for him, to which Carol replies rather dryly...that she knows that. She even thinks that someone as rigid and smug as Sinestro has a little bit of love in his heart, and lo and behold, she encases him in pink crystal! We get to see that he fell for Abin Sur's sister, Arin Sur! Sinestro! Who'd have thunk? Since there is also a scene of him cradling her body and crying out in anguish, we can assume that it doesn't end well.

This bit of self-revelation has the unfortunate result of REALLy pissing him off! He has Carol pretty much on the ropes, when who should show up,
but the former Sinestro Corps members...now Black Lanterns!

Ulp!

On Odym, Sayd and Ganthet are having one heck of a time fending off the
Greed constructs of Larfleeze. However, it may all become moot, as Larfleeze is confonted by some interesting apparitions himself!

>Photobucket

Oh Larfleeze. You're so awful, and yet somehow so amusing.

So I guess that the Guardian's new rule, that it was ok to run around
executing people has backfired in the very worst way. Stupid Guardians.
I am also intrigued by the information revealed by Sinestro, was Arin Sur the mother of Soranik? Did she die? I thought that perhaps the Lost Star
Sapphire might turn out to be Soranik's mother, but now I'm not sure. All I do know for sure, is that Blackest Night is REALLY gettin' good!

It's Thursday, so that means Reviews

Not a ton of books out this week, but gosh, such NICE books.

Batman & Robin #3. I'm so glad this came out, I was beginning to miss it. There is nothing quite like a Morrison/Quitely collaboration, and that was definitely the case with this book. Professor Pyg, as you all recall was wreaking havok in Gotham and had even managed to grab our sweet little Robin. Boy howdy, does THAT turn out to be a mistake on his part! Meanwhile, Batman is using his own "unique" methods of interrogation, so unique in fact, that even Commissioner Gordon is freaked out. Dick is really taking Alfred's advice of "Playing a Part" to heart.

There are a lot of pages of Professor Pyg being extremely weird, not to mention creepy, but it is all good violent fun.

Batwoman in Detective Comics. I'm rather enjoying this, and I wasn't really sure that I would. I do have to say...again...that J.H. Williams artwork is heartbreakingly pretty. I also like Kate's father, the Colonel. I feel a little bit of sympathy for Kate's long-suffering stepmother, but it has to be admitted that Kate does look nice in a tux. She even gets to waltz with Maggie Sawyer. Oh, and a werewolf shows up.

The Question, is having troubles of her own, getting captured, and thrown in the trunk of a car, which is subsequently pushed into a body of water. You do NOT want to cross Renee when she is wet and tired!

The Flash #4. Well gosharootie! All KINDS of interesting things are coming to light! I simply love Silver Age science! It turns out that Barry didn't just tap into the Speed Force when he gained his powers, he CREATED the Speed Force! Woohoo! And Professor Zoom has control of the Anti-Speed Force...or something. And Wally is incredibly brave. And Bart gets what he wanted. Just fabulous, all around.

Green Lantern #45. Don't bother looking for Hal. But seriously...you won't care.

Gotham City Sirens #3. This is my favorite issue of this mini yet. Selina and Ivy only show up for a little bit, the main story concerns my favorite Bat-villain, Edward Nigma, aka the Riddler. I just like him for some reason. He's a good bad guy. Or a bad good guy. Or something. The art isn't my favorite, but I can overlook it, since I enjoyed the story. Fun!

The Incredible Hercules...concerns the trials and tribulations of Amadeus Cho, the Seventh Smartest person, who is having one heck of a time on his own hero quest. A HECK of a time! Let's just say that some very strange and peculiar things are going on in Excello, Utah. Even more so than the USUAL strange and peculiar things that go on in Utah! A hoot as usual.

Justice Society of America #30. Well, things are finally beginning to pick up, with the new storyline. For some reason, the gang of villians that had been beating the crap our of our heroes are treating Courtney with kid gloves. She decides to take full advantage of this, when it's down to just her and Jay. Jay takes off, but not to worry, he's just bringing in some backup in the form of the new Doctor Fate, who turns the tables rather neatly, and humorously on the bad guys.

Back at the Brownstone, they discover the mostly...but not completely lifeless body of Mr. Terrific, and they begin to realize that they've been played for fools. Oh, an Magog makes a complete ass of himself. You just DON'T diss old people if you want to be on the Justice Society. It Is Not Done. He and Wildcat square off at the end, and I REALLY hope that Wildcat kicks his shiny obnoxious ass.

Wonder Woman #35. Well heck, this was good. Diana and Dinah, prowl Tokyo, and stumble upon some rather...interesting toys and action figures, not to mention noodles. They also continue to fight in the underground arena, while trying to rescue Director Steel. But Diana meets her match and more, when the Goddess Pele, daughter of Kane Milohai turns up, bent on revenge. Kane was the one who helped Diana out when she was looking for some Gods, and then Zeus, like the massive tool that he is, went and ripped his heart out, for some stupid reason. Diana has rejected her Gods, but that's not good enough for Pele, who is mad as heck.

Dinah is left alone to take on the rest of the bad guys in the arena, which she does...handily, while Diana and Pele come to an understanding of sorts. And Doctor Psycho is in big trouble. Oh, and Tom Tresser has some news for Diana. Gosh, I love this book.

Help!

I've managed to slowly begin restoring all the scans that I inadvertently wiped out, due to my little "organization" a short while ago. I understand the principal behind the addresses changing at photobucket. I even managed to get my icon back, but the life of me, I can't figure out how to restore my banner at the top of my blog. I have the picture itself, with its new photobucket address, but when I went to erase the old address and type in the new one, I was afraid that I'd blow up the whole shebang.

Is there a process for this? Can anyone explain in small words for a technology-deficient old lady?

I miss Hal's butt.

Irresistable

As I pointed out yesturday, Zinda not only knows Guy Gardner, she actually likes him. Granted, when they met, he had just acquired his Warrior powers, and therefore had most of his brains back...but still!

Diana likes Guy, they've been flirting mildly for years. I'm still depressed sometimes that Beau Smith's idea of putting the two together romantically scared the living wee out of DC. I don't know how long it would have lasted, but it could have been an awful lot of fun. She's probably too good for him, but hell, she's too good for ANYbody.

Arisia started out hating Guy, and then he took her in when she lost her ring and gave her a home and a job, and they ended up being practically like brother and sister. He did the same thing for Zinda. Dinah and he used to fight like cats and dogs back in the old JLI, and yet, she came right out and said that he was hot. Granted, it was actually his evil clone Joe, but SHE didn't know that.

Bea had the hots for him for years, secretly, and they did get together after Tora died, which has still been completely ignored by most writers. Tora of course is the great love of his life, but even Kari Bimbo preferred him to Hal...which I find hilarious.

And it's not just the women apparently.

silly

I know just how he feels.

There's Just Something About a Hot Pilot

Pilots are cool, there's just no two ways about it. There is something admirable about being supremely confident and good at what you do, and I would think that being a pilot is one of those professions or hobbies, where you pretty much HAVE to be competent. If you aren't, you tend to get weeded out fairly quickly. Gravity IS a harsh mistress after all.

Pilots also have a tendancy to be dashing. I personally believe that Hal has a long silk scarf and leather helmet with goggles hidden away in his closet somewhere. But I'm not really talking about Hal today. No, I'm talking about my OTHER favorite pilot.

Birds of Prey

Why, none other than the ineffable Lady Blackhawk.

I happen to adore Zinda for some reason. For one thing, she IS dashing. And competent and brave and adorable. She's also spunky...not to mention resilient. She would have HAD to be one crackerjack of a pilot even to have been taken on as a Blackhawk back in WWII, where female flyers were not exactly in large numbers. Then she managed to handle being snatched into the future with considerable aplomb and humor. She marched right into Warrior's and charmed the heck out of everyone, and managed to end up with a job and a home, which would certainly have been a daunting task.

Do I think that she had a threesome with Helena and Hal? I can certainly see her jumping Hal, because he IS awfully pretty, and Zinda does have an appreciation for men. I can't really see her doing it with Helena however. I do think that she managed to drink Hal under the table, which, let's face it, couldn't have been too hard, and then she and Helena left him tied up in their hotel room, along with the brandy bottle and a note. Oh, and the bill. Then they went home and told Dinah and Babs all about it, laughing their asses off. Dinah, then gave an expurgated version to Ollie. THAT would be why Hal was so flustered when Ollie began giving him the old "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" treatment, because he's terrified that the REAL version of what went on, will get out. You'll notice that he certainly didn't correct Ollie's version.

And maybe, just maybe, one of these days, Zinda will head on over and REALLY give old Hal a good time.

Setem [2009]

Director: Khabir Bhatia
Cast: Afdlin Shauki, Rashidi Ishak, Vanidah Imran, Bront Palarae, Sathia, Que Haidar
Genre: Heist/Action/Comedy
Rating: General
Comment: "A must see. A breath of fresh air for the local movie scene..."

I have never had the privilege of Khabir Bhatia-directed flicks. For those who are unaware, this is the third motion picture directed by him. What is different this time is that, Setem is totally different from what he has done thus far. A brave attempt indeed, for the mainstream Malaysian movie scene is not generally known for making decent action movies. FPBM! has been watching action movies since the tender age of nine. So believe me, I know what I'm talking about.

Setem begins with the introduction of the subject matter, a stamp with a colourful history which will later become an obsession for everyone who comes into contact with it. For Joe and Sid, however, their obsession with the stamp is at a different level; they plan on stealing it. But they are not alone...

If you find yourself enjoying the movie past the first hundred minutes (which, in FPBM!'s opinion, is a tad too long, considering the nature of the film) you will probably find no fault with it. This movie has it all; action, tasteful humour & brilliant performances from the cast.
